Tieto, the largest Nordic IT services company, provides full life-cycle services in the private and public sector. Founded 1968 and headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, Tieto operates in over 20 countries with approximately 17,000 experts worldwide. Tieto’s global presence is felt through its product engineering business and delivery centers, and boasts annual net sales of approximately EUR 1.8 billion. At Tieto, professional development and results are top priorities. Therefore, when a customer needed to upgrade its Microsoft Dynamics NAV and LS Retail solutions, Tieto undertook the project with care.
The customer was using Microsoft Business Solutions Navision 3.70 with LS Retail 3.75. LS Retail is the leading provider of end-to-end solutions and services for the Retail, Hospitality, and Forecourt industries using Microsoft Dynamics and .NET technology. LS Retail has been installed by 2,200 companies with 40,000 stores operating 100,000 POS terminals worldwide.
The upgrade project was complex from a development point of view. Microsoft Business Solutions Navision 3.70 needed to be upgraded by 3 versions to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009, and LS Retail needed to be upgraded by 4 versions from 3.75 to 6.0.
Tieto had two main goals: upgrade the customer’s solutions in a cost-effective manner, and keep the project timeline as short as possible. It was clear that Tieto needed experts with a background in both NAV and LS Retail.
Since Tieto did not have enough technical specialists to quickly implement the upgrades, 1ClickFactory was entrusted with this complex project. Carita Liflander, an external consultant, was assigned to the upgrade project. She says, “The price was reasonable, we lacked time and resources, and 1ClickFactory had a lot of experience in upgrades. It was easy to make the decision to outsource this project.”
1ClickFactory specialists sought the most effective upgrade approach. The biggest challenge was data migration. An upgrade project typically has a two-step data migration process, but this project required six steps. In order to save time and cut down on cost, 1ClickFactory had to find a way to simplify the data migration. The solution was a partial upgrade. Although the customer was operating much older versions, there was no need to perform a full upgrade for each intermediate version. Only the elements necessary to data migration were fully upgraded, at a 40-50% reduction in the project’s time and cost.
The customer as well as Tieto benefited from working with 1ClickFactory. “Tieto was not as familiar with the LS Retail upgrades, and 1ClickFactory had experienced specialists ready to help,” Liflander says. It was also a training experience for Tieto’s own experts. According to Liflander, “It was a great opportunity for us to learn from 1ClickFactory, especially since there are not many organizations that could help with an upgrade where the LS Retail add-on is involved.”
Liflander also notes the increase of Tieto’s capacity. “While 1ClickFactory was doing the upgrade, our technical people were able to fully devote themselves to other customer projects.”
When asked about the experience of working with 1ClickFactory, Liflander expressed total satisfaction. “Everything was delivered according to plan and the communication went very smoothly,” she says. Most importantly, “The project was implemented on time and within budget.” The upgrades were quickly and successfully completed, and the customer was satisfied with its new solutions. Says Liflander, “I was very satisfied with the project and the way 1ClickFactory delivered it. I would definitely recommend 1ClickFactory.”
